Kimi Antonelli’s Formula 1 championship lead has been cut further after a technical failure ended his British Grand Prix at Silverstone, with Charles Leclerc claiming victory in the ninth round of the 2026 season.

Antonelli had been in contention for the win when the issue struck, marking his second non-score of the campaign. The retirement proved costly in the standings, as title rivals George Russell and Lewis Hamilton both capitalised to claw back ground on the Mercedes driver.

Leclerc’s victory at Silverstone was a timely result for Ferrari, who now find themselves with renewed hope in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. The win underlines the increasingly competitive nature of a title fight that appeared to be drifting toward Antonelli in the earlier rounds.

For Antonelli, the afternoon represented a significant missed opportunity. Having secured pole position — overcoming what was described as a nervous qualifying session — the Italian teenager was well-placed to extend his advantage before the mechanical problem intervened.

Russell and Hamilton, both racing for Mercedes, now sit closer to their teammate in the standings after converting Antonelli’s misfortune into a productive points haul. The dynamic between Ferrari and Mercedes is sharpening with each passing round, and Silverstone has only intensified that rivalry heading into the second half of the season.

With ten rounds remaining, Antonelli retains the championship lead but his buffer has narrowed. The frequency of his non-scores — two in nine races — will be a concern for Mercedes as the title fight enters its most critical phase.
