Tchouameni or Koné: Deschamps faces a real dilemma before France-Spain
Hours before the World Cup semi-final against Spain, Didier Deschamps is still uncertain about his midfield: Aurélien Tchouameni, doubtful after ten days without playing, could give way to Manu Koné, who has impressed since entering the competition.
Didier Deschamps has not yet decided. Hours before the World Cup semi-final between France and Spain, a major uncertainty persists in the French midfield: will Aurélien Tchouameni start alongside Adrien Rabiot, or will Manu Koné establish himself in the starting eleven?
Tchouameni, considered indispensable at the start of the tournament, was forced to withdraw on the eve of the quarter-final against Paraguay due to a muscle injury. Since then, Koné has replaced him twice — first against Iraq, then against Paraguay and Morocco — delivering convincing performances. Enough to plant doubt in the mind of the manager.
Former international Jean-Philippe Durand, questioned by Ouest-France, offered his analysis. “It’s a difficult choice. When you’re a manager, it’s a choice of riches. When you have two players of this level… I’m not in Didier’s head but in his mind, I imagine Tchouameni remains the starter. But he has his two options. Will I leave Koné out or not? I think it depends mainly on Tchouameni’s physical condition, that’s the question mark.”
Durand also highlighted the possibility of a mixed solution: “We know Koné is ready, that he’s in rhythm, that he can play his game, but nothing prevents playing Tchouameni and bringing Koné on if we realize he hasn’t returned to his best. He missed a week of competition and when you have a small muscle problem, the return is always a bit hesitant. You always have in the back of your mind the potential relapse.”
On a purely sporting level, the two profiles stand out clearly. “Koné is more effective in explosiveness, pressing, in getting the ball out at the opponent’s feet. Tchouameni is more about reading the game, he’s a bigger frame, he’s better at defensive heading,” Durand detailed. “Tchouameni is more of a diesel engine, a bit more flexible than Koné who is more of an impact player. Perhaps for certain teams his profile will be a bit more interesting. But both pairings work very well.”
Meanwhile, uncertainties seem to have been cleared up elsewhere in the eleven: Lucas Digne should establish himself on the left ahead of Théo Hernandez, while Désiré Doué, who delivered a fine performance against Morocco, is expected in the starting eleven.
