Tafuna's hat-trick rescues USA Women's Eagles to seal dramatic 26-24 win over Wales

Freda Tafuna scored a second-half hat-trick try to seal a 26-24 victory for the USA Women’s Eagles over Wales at Cardiff Arms Park, completing an unbeaten two-match European tour for Sean Lynn’s side.

The Eagles made a blistering start, with Tafuna — last week’s player of the match — crashing over twice in the opening quarter to put the visitors 14-0 ahead. Bella Vogel converted both scores, and the contest looked to be heading in one direction.

Wales, however, produced a stunning turnaround before half-time. Scrum-half Keira Bevan sniped through for the hosts’ first try after a powerful carry from co-captain Kate Williams, before Kelsey Jones and Sisilia Tuipulotu added further scores. Co-captain Alex Callender then found the narrowest of gaps in the USA defence to complete a remarkable five-try swing, sending Wales into the break 24-21 ahead.

The second half was a far tighter affair, with neither side able to replicate the attacking fluency of the first 40 minutes. The decisive moment came when Tafuna, the powerful number eight, drove over from close range after the USA forwards worked patiently through a series of pick-and-goes to complete her hat-trick and restore the Eagles’ lead at 26-24.

Wales pressed for a response in the closing stages but could not find the score they needed, as the USA held on to claim a hard-fought victory.

The match was not without controversy. Referee Amber McLachlan spoke to both captains early on after heated exchanges between the sides, while a TMO check for a potential obstruction on Tafuna’s second try and a high-tackle review on Tuipulotu — which resulted in a penalty rather than a card — added to the feisty atmosphere.

Despite the drama, the Eagles’ clinical use of possession in the opening quarter proved to be the defining difference between two closely matched sides.
