Brian Brobbey has suffered what a Dutch medical expert describes as a ‘very serious’ hamstring injury, dealing Sunderland a significant blow after the striker was forced to withdraw from the Netherlands squad during the international break.

Brobbey lasted just over 30 minutes in Xavi Hernandez’s first match as Netherlands manager — a Nations League fixture against Germany — before pulling up with what appeared to be a hamstring strain. He subsequently returned to Sunderland for assessment.

Ex-PSV doctor Cees-Rein van den Hoogenband, speaking to Sportnieuws.nl in an interview relayed by Sport Witness, was unambiguous in his assessment. “If you look at Brobbey, he has a very serious hamstring injury,” he said. “That’s a typical example of overuse.” Van den Hoogenband also used the case to criticise the modern football calendar, adding: “That has a huge medical impact. Everyone can see that from the large number of injuries, both nationally and internationally. The commercial interests are so incredibly high.”

The timing is a painful one for Sunderland. Brobbey had been in outstanding form since joining the club, most recently scoring a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Premier League. He had also cemented his place as first choice under Xavi in the Netherlands setup, earning nine international appearances in 2026 alone.

The workload behind those numbers is considerable. Brobbey made 32 appearances for Sunderland last season and had already featured six times for the club this term before the injury struck — a schedule that van den Hoogenband suggests has taken its toll on the striker’s body.

Brobbey’s injury history offers some cause for concern. He missed three games in February and March last season with a groin problem, and an ankle injury with Ajax delayed his start to the campaign before his move to Wearside.

Valued at around €40 million by Transfermarkt, Brobbey’s absence — should it prove lengthy — would leave Sunderland short of their most potent attacking option as the Premier League season builds momentum.
