Sunderland swoop for Lyon winger Fofana as Arsenal hesitation opens the door

Sunderland are on the verge of signing Lyon winger Malick Fofana on a five-year contract, with the 21-year-old Belgian given permission to travel to the Stadium of Light for a medical ahead of the transfer deadline, according to The Athletic.

The deal would represent one of the most eye-catching transfers of the summer window for Regis Le Bris’ side, who have been relatively quiet in the market until now. Fofana is regarded as one of European football’s most exciting young wide attackers, and his availability stems directly from Lyon’s financial difficulties following their failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
