Stroll racks up three track-limits penalties in nine laps at Silverstone
Lance Stroll collected three separate five-second penalties in just nine laps during the British Grand Prix, each for exceeding track limits. The Aston Martin driver had already started from the back after a grid penalty, with the AMR26 the slowest car on the grid.
Lance Stroll accumulated 15 seconds in track-limits penalties during the closing stages of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, receiving three separate five-second sanctions in the space of just nine laps.
The Aston Martin driver had little chance of making an impression on Sunday’s race before the penalties even began. The AMR26 is currently the slowest car on the grid, and onboard footage throughout the weekend showed Stroll battling severe understeer around the Silverstone circuit.
The Canadian had qualified 21st and second-last on Saturday, ahead of only his teammate Fernando Alonso. His race-day situation worsened further when a change of Honda engine components beyond the permitted quota triggered a 10-place grid penalty, dropping him to 22nd on the starting grid.
Stroll’s afternoon only drew attention in the closing laps, and not for the right reasons. Under F1 regulations, drivers are permitted three track-limits violations before penalties are applied; any further excursion beyond the white lines carries an immediate sanction. Having already used up his three allowed infractions, Stroll proceeded to exceed the limits three more times in rapid succession, each one drawing an instant five-second time penalty.
The sequence of violations — three penalties in nine laps — underlined a difficult weekend for both driver and team. Aston Martin’s pace deficit has been a recurring theme in 2025, and Silverstone offered little sign of improvement, with Stroll’s race serving as a stark illustration of the AMR26’s current struggles.
