Sinckler extends Toulon deal until 2029, ending hopes of Premiership return

Kyle Sinckler has committed his future to Toulon, signing a two-year contract extension that will keep the 33-year-old tight-head at the Stade Mayol until 2029 and effectively ending speculation over a return to English rugby.

The former England and British & Irish Lions prop had entered the final year of his existing deal in July, prompting sustained interest from several Premiership clubs. Harlequins, where Sinckler made more than 130 appearances earlier in his career, were among the sides linked, along with Newcastle Red Bulls and Exeter Chiefs. The Chiefs had been tracking Sinckler as a potential successor to Josh Iosefa-Scott, whose own contract enters its final 12 months, while Newcastle’s financial backing gave them credibility as suitors despite already holding long-term deals with tight-heads Elliot Millar Mills and James Harper.

By committing to Toulon, Sinckler also remains outside Steve Borthwick’s England selection pool under the Rugby Football Union’s overseas player policy. He has earned 68 caps, featuring in two Rugby World Cups, but will not be available for international consideration for the foreseeable future.

Now in his third season with Les Rouges et Noir, Sinckler has become a central figure at the club. In his first two campaigns he helped Toulon reach the semi-finals of both the Champions Cup and the Top 14, and he has started their opening two matches of the current season — defeats against Bayonne and La Rochelle. The club are understood to view Sinckler alongside Régis Montagne and Owen Sorhaindo as their core tight-head options for the coming seasons.

Sinckler has spoken candidly about the impact the move to the south of France had on his relationship with the game. Shortly after joining Toulon, he told L’Equipe that the scrummaging culture in the Top 14 had reignited his passion.

“In France, there is more pressure in the connections,” he said. “The spirit of the scrum is very different here. In Toulon, the scrum is a story of life and death. It’s exhilarating. In England, we are more analytical. Here, we put emotions into it. It’s a whole city and a region that vibrates. In Toulon you feel like a gladiator. I love it.”

For the Premiership clubs who had identified Sinckler as a target, the search for top-end tight-head cover will now have to continue elsewhere.
