Scotland centre James Lang returns to Harlequins five years after title win

James Lang has rejoined Harlequins on a deal covering the 2026/27 season, returning to the Twickenham Stoop five years after he left as a Premiership champion. Edinburgh released the Scotland international centre following a serious ankle injury sustained in their Champions Cup round-of-16 defeat to Leinster, which ended his campaign early and proved to be his final appearance for the club.

Lang, 31, spent five years at Edinburgh, making 90 appearances for the Scottish capital club before his season was cut short. His return to Harlequins completes the club’s squad for next season, though he faces considerable competition for a midfield berth from Oscar Beard, Luke Northmore, Bryn Bradley, Sean Kerr, and Ben Waghorn.

The centre is a product of the Harlequins academy and had a spell with Welsh club RGC 1404 before his first return to London. During his initial five-season stint at the Stoop from 2016 to 2021, he made 120 first-team appearances, scored 214 points, and earned six Scotland caps. The highlight of that period was lifting the Premiership trophy in 2021.

Head coach Jason Gilmore welcomed the signing, pointing to Lang’s familiarity with the club’s culture and his qualities in the midfield. “James knows this club inside out, and it’s been clear from the first day he walked back into the building how much he still loves being here,” Gilmore said. “He brings composure, rugby IQ and real experience in midfield, and we’re excited to have him back as part of the squad for 2026/27.”

Lang himself spoke of the emotional pull of the return. “Coming back to Harlequins feels like coming home. This club shaped me as a player and as a person, and being back out on the training pitches these last couple of weeks has reminded me exactly why,” he said. “There is a new feel to the environment and an excitement within the squad of the levels of performance we can achieve this season.”
