Savea returns to All Blacks for Ellis Park Test as Springboks rivalry 'takes you to places where you question yourself'
Ardie Savea is back in the All Blacks starting lineup at No.8 for Saturday's first Test against the Springboks at Ellis Park, after two weeks of rest, declaring South Africa are currently at the peak of their powers.
Ardie Savea will start at No.8 for the All Blacks against the Springboks at Ellis Park on Saturday, the first of four Tests in a month-long series inspired by the historic tours that forged one of rugby’s defining rivalries. The 32-year-old returns refreshed after two weeks away from the squad, during which New Zealand won all three matches played without him.
Savea described his time off as “just being a dad” — a break he admitted was “one of those things you don’t realise you need until you’re doing it.” Since rejoining the squad in Johannesburg, he said he has not tried to impose himself on a group that has already built strong momentum, preferring instead to “add to the energy that’s already here.”
The All Blacks captain was candid about the unique psychological demands of facing South Africa, acknowledging that the Springboks are operating at the height of their ability. “Every time we play the Springboks it’s challenging,” Savea said. “It takes you to places where you kind of question yourself. But as an All Black, that’s where you want to be.”
He was equally effusive about the venue. Ellis Park, one of the most intimidating stadiums in world rugby, holds a particular significance for Savea. “It’s probably the best place you want to play as a footy player,” he said. “You run out, you see the Springbok warriors coming out, and the team and the crowd. It’s pretty special.” He added that a chance encounter with former Springbok centre Jean de Villiers — a player he watched as a child — underlined the weight of the occasion.
Despite his respect for the opposition, Savea was clear that the All Blacks believe they belong in the same conversation. “We respect the Springboks, the world-class outfit they are. But also, I believe we’re just as quality. Hopefully we go out there and put a spectacle on.”
One of the individual match-ups drawing attention is Ruben Love’s first start against the reigning world champions since claiming the All Blacks’ No.10 jersey in July. The 25-year-old will face Springboks playmaker Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Savea said Love’s rise has come as no surprise, recalling that the young fly-half’s mindset marked him out from early in his professional career. “He’s been awesome. I kind of always knew that Rubes had it,” Savea said.
