Sale Sharks snatch late penalty try to inflict third straight defeat on struggling Harlequins
Sale Sharks came from behind to beat Harlequins 28-24 at CorpAcq Stadium on Saturday, a 73rd-minute penalty try sealing a fifth consecutive win over Quins and leaving Jason Gilmore's side rooted to the bottom of the Gallagher Premiership.
Sale Sharks snatched a 28-24 victory over Harlequins at CorpAcq Stadium in Salford, a 73rd-minute penalty try completing a comeback that left Quins with three defeats from three Gallagher Premiership matches this season.
Marcus Smith, returning from a finger injury for his first appearance of the campaign, touched down twice in the opening quarter to give the visitors a 17-14 half-time lead and threaten a much-needed win. But Sale’s pack ultimately proved decisive, mauling Harlequins back 30 metres in the closing stages before hooker Sam Riley pulled down the maul close to the tryline, conceding a penalty try and earning himself a yellow card. Short-handed and chasing the game, Quins could not find a way back.
The result extends Sale’s winning run over Harlequins to five matches across the league and Europe, and follows back-to-back Premiership wins over Saracens and Bristol after the Sharks lost their opening-day fixture.
For Harlequins, the defeat compounds a wretched start to the season. Last weekend they suffered a 48-0 humiliation at the hands of Gloucester — their worst league defeat in 26 years — and head coach Jason Gilmore made seven changes in response. The improvement was visible, but not enough.
Smith’s early double, the first set up by a sharp tip pass from George Furbank that freed Luke Northmore, gave Quins genuine momentum. Hooker Riley had opened the scoring in the third minute, and Quins had two further tries disallowed before the break. Sale replied through Fijian number eight Elia Canakaivata on his first Premiership start — with Jacques Vermeulen suspended following a red card against Saracens — and scrum-half Gus Warr, who finished off a midfield move involving Alex Lozowski to make it 17-14 at the interval.
Riley crossed again in the 53rd minute after a Sharks maul to give Quins a bonus point, but Sale hit back when second row Ben Bamber finished off an initial break by Nicky Smith. A crucial lineout steal from Courtney Lawes halted a Quins attack, and when Chandler Cunningham-South intercepted George Ford’s pass but failed to find Cadan Murley in support, the momentum shifted decisively toward the hosts.
Harlequins remain bottom of the Premiership table with their first points of the season scant consolation after three consecutive defeats.
