Saka faces weeks on sideline after calf injury leaves Arsenal without key man until December
Bukayo Saka could miss Arsenal's clashes with Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham after sustaining a calf injury in the Champions League draw at Bayern Munich on Wednesday. The England winger faces a race to be fit for the visit of Real Madrid on December 9.
Bukayo Saka is facing a lay-off of several weeks after sustaining a calf injury during Arsenal’s Champions League draw at Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, with the Gunners already resigned to losing their star winger until at least December.
Saka was forced off the pitch in Munich and will undergo further MRI scans to determine the precise extent of the damage. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the initial scan was complicated by fluid around the injury site, making an accurate diagnosis difficult in the immediate aftermath.
“When a player has to walk off the pitch, he is struggling to walk without any pain, he’s restricted to movement — they are not good signs,” Arteta said. “He’s got another MRI this afternoon because he had quite a lot of fluid in the area so it was difficult to understand the extent of the injury. We will know more probably tomorrow.”
The timing is damaging for Arsenal on multiple fronts. Saka will definitely miss the trip to Anfield on November 1, and the injury also rules him out of England’s Nations League fixtures, including the group decider against Spain on November 15. Manchester City visit the Emirates on November 29, followed by the north London derby at Tottenham the week after. Saka will be sweating on his fitness ahead of the high-profile Champions League home tie against Real Madrid on December 9.
Perhaps most alarming is the frequency of the setbacks: this is reportedly Saka’s 11th injury since September 2024, raising questions about workload management across club and international football.
Arteta stopped short of attributing the recurring problems to burnout, but acknowledged that the relentless fixture schedule is taking a toll on players across the board.
“The demands that we are putting to every player are immense,” he said. “The amount of games, the intensity of those matches, the international competitions — the time between games is getting narrower. We have to play on Sunday afternoon, then away on Wednesday evening, then again on Saturday. That’s less than 67 hours between games. Every hour is important.”
Arteta extended his concern beyond Arsenal, calling on the wider football ecosystem to recognise the physical cost being placed on elite players. Whether Saka can return in time to face Real Madrid remains the central question for the Gunners as they navigate a pivotal stretch of the season.
