Russell vows 'this season will not break me' as Antonelli closes in on maiden title

George Russell has pushed back against a difficult 2026 campaign, insisting he has '12 to 15 years' left in Formula 1. The 28-year-old arrives in Mexico City 123 points behind team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who can clinch his first world championship this weekend.

George Russell arrived at the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend defiant about his Formula 1 future, telling reporters he has “a good 12 to 15 years” left in the sport despite being outpaced by Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli for much of the 2026 season. Antonelli, in only his second F1 campaign, can seal his maiden world championship this weekend, with Russell sitting 123 points adrift in second place in the drivers’ standings.

Russell’s year has been one of sharp contrasts. He won the season opener in Australia and claimed a dominant victory in Baku, but three retirements caused by reliability failures and back-to-back ninth and eighth-place finishes in Singapore and Austin have undermined his title challenge. Antonelli, by contrast, has delivered the consistency that has put him on the verge of the championship.

“I’ve probably learned more about myself this year than I would have liked to, in all honesty,” Russell admitted. “The highs and lows you go through in sport are immense. And that’s because we all care so much for what we’re doing.”

The Briton drew on the careers of Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso to frame his perspective. “I’m 28 years old. I see Lewis still competing extremely well at 41 and Fernando at 45. Lewis won the majority of his titles in his 30s. And this year is absolutely not going to define my career as a whole. It’s not going to break me. If anything, it’s going to make me stronger.”

Russell also acknowledged a pattern in his own performances that he said warrants closer examination. “I always perform best after my worst races — maybe it’s just a coincidence, maybe there’s something in it. But I’ve been racing more years of my life than I haven’t, and I’ve had more successful years than relative failures.”

He was candid about the timing of his struggles. “I don’t think any athlete, no matter how great, has every single year of their career performing at their highest level. Unfortunately, this year for me has come at maybe the time when I needed it most. But it’s by no means the end of my journey.”

With Antonelli poised to become one of the youngest world champions in the sport’s history, Russell’s immediate task in Mexico City is to keep his own season alive while watching his 19-year-old team-mate potentially lift the trophy.
