Russell seals pole-to-flag Azerbaijan win as Verstappen's late charge falls short

George Russell converted pole position into a dominant victory at the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, resisting a late surge from Max Verstappen to claim his third Formula 1 win of the season. The Mercedes driver led throughout a race disrupted by two safety cars and a multi-car collision at the lap 36 restart.

Russell had signalled Mercedes’ intent on Friday by taking pole by eight tenths of a second, and the race confirmed that advantage was no mirage. Starting on medium tyres while rivals opted for softs, he quickly broke clear of the pack and managed the low-degradation Baku street circuit with composure, making a single pitstop at the optimal moment under the first safety car.

That first interruption came on lap 30 of 51 when Alex Albon locked up into Turn 5 and pierced the TecPro barriers while defending 13th place from Esteban Ocon, escaping without injury. The pit-lane scramble that followed reshuffled the order but left Russell at the front, ahead of Oscar Piastri, Verstappen, Isack Hadjar, Charles Leclerc, and Lewis Hamilton.

The lap 36 restart proved far more damaging for the midfield. Verstappen immediately dispatched Piastri for second, but behind them Franco Colapinto locked up and speared into Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly, collecting Lando Norris in the process. Kimi Antonelli, who had already recovered from 16th on the grid, narrowly avoided the wreckage and went on to finish fifth — a significant points haul for Mercedes’ rookie.

With Norris eliminated, Verstappen was left as the sole realistic threat to Russell, but the Red Bull driver could not close the gap sufficiently in the closing laps. Piastri held on for third, giving McLaren a podium despite a difficult afternoon on Baku’s long straight, where both papaya cars had visibly struggled for traction out of Turn 16.

The result extends Russell’s lead in the drivers’ championship and reinforces Mercedes’ status as the team to beat heading into the next round. For Verstappen, a second-place finish limits the damage, while Norris’s retirement hands a significant advantage to his title rivals.
