Finn Russell returns to Scotland’s starting XV for the Nations Championship fixture against South Africa in Pretoria on Saturday, 11 July, as head coach Gregor Townsend makes three changes to the side that opened the campaign with victory in Argentina.

The Bath stand-off missed last weekend’s win in Córdoba while completing his recovery from a calf injury that had already ruled him out of the final three games of Bath’s club season. He slots straight back into the ten jersey, with Tom Jordan — who started in his absence — dropping to the bench.

The two remaining changes are both in the pack. Zander Fagerson comes in at tighthead prop to replace Elliot Millar Mills, who suffered a campaign-ending injury against Argentina. In the second row, Gregor Brown — who came off the bench to score in Córdoba — is rewarded with a start in place of Jonny Gray, who drops out of the 23 altogether.

The bench is configured in a 6-2 split, with Will Hurd, Josh Bayliss, Magnus Bradbury and Stafford McDowall all added among the replacements. George Horne, Fergus Burke and Darcy Graham, who featured last weekend, are all omitted from the matchday squad.

Scotland head into the fixture with a historic incentive: they have never beaten South Africa on South African soil, and Pretoria represents their latest opportunity to end that record.

Scotland XV: Kyle Rowe (Glasgow), Kyle Steyn (Glasgow), Rory Hutchinson (Northampton), Sione Tuipulotu (Glasgow), Jamie Dobie (Glasgow), Finn Russell (Bath), Ben White (Toulon); Pierre Schoeman (Edinburgh), Ewan Ashman (Edinburgh), Zander Fagerson (Glasgow), Gregor Brown (Glasgow), Scott Cummings (Glasgow), Matt Fagerson (Glasgow), Rory Darge (Glasgow), Jack Dempsey (Toshiba Brave Lupus).

Replacements: Gregor Hiddleston, Rory Sutherland (both Glasgow), Will Hurd (Leicester), Alex Samuel (Glasgow), Josh Bayliss (Bath), Magnus Bradbury (Edinburgh), Tom Jordan (Bristol), Stafford McDowall (Glasgow).
