Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to start for Portugal against Croatia on Thursday at Toronto Stadium, with a round of 16 place on the line. The 41-year-old has scored twice in three group-stage appearances at his sixth World Cup.
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to lead Portugal’s attack against Croatia on Thursday at Toronto Stadium, with the two sides meeting in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at 7 p.m. ET.
Portugal’s captain and veteran striker started all three of their group-stage matches, scoring twice and playing every minute of the 270 available. Both goals came in a 5-0 demolition of Uzbekistan, as Portugal finished second in Group K to advance to the knockout rounds.
Ronaldo’s participation against Croatia is not in doubt. As the anchor of the Portuguese attack, the 41-year-old is expected to start and play the bulk of the match, barring any late fitness concerns.
The Croatia fixture marks another chapter in a record-breaking World Cup career for Ronaldo. He is competing in his sixth World Cup, equalling Argentina’s Lionel Messi for the most appearances at the tournament. He also remains the only player in history to have scored in all six World Cups he has entered.
Across 25 World Cup matches, Ronaldo has accumulated 10 goals and two assists. His two strikes in this edition leave him as an outside contender for the Golden Boot, with current tournament odds reflecting the depth of competition at the top of the scoring charts.
A win on Thursday would send Portugal into the round of 16 and keep Ronaldo’s pursuit of the one major international trophy that has so far eluded him firmly on track.
