Dave Rennie has named his first All Blacks squad since taking charge, with Hurricanes prop Xavier Numia and record-setting winger Fehi Fineanganofo both included on the bench and set to make their international debuts against France in the Nations Championship opener at One New Zealand Stadium in Christchurch.

While the starting XV contains no uncapped players, Rennie has made several bold selection calls. Josh Lord and Sam Darry form a new second-row partnership, with veteran lock Patrick Tuipulotu providing cover from the bench. Experienced loosehead Beauden Barrett has been left out of the 23 entirely.

The back row has also raised eyebrows. New All Blacks captain Ardie Savea, widely expected to start at openside, has instead been named at No.8, with Luke Jacobson wearing the No.7 jersey. Hurricanes flanker Peter Lakai takes the blindside berth ahead of last year’s incumbent Simon Parker and newcomer Anton Segner.

In the halves, Cam Roigard partners in-form first five-eighth Ruben Love, while Damian McKenzie shifts to fullback. The midfield pairing of Jordie Barrett and Quinn Tupaea has been retained from last season, with Billy Proctor named at No.22 as cover.

“There is no doubt players have forced our hand as selectors through quality Super Rugby performances,” Rennie said. “We have selected an exciting blend of experience and youth, with a powerful bench that will add impact.”

Rennie also acknowledged the scale of the challenge posed by France. “We know we will be facing a formidable French side with a strong set piece, kicking game and ability to keep the ball alive, so we will need to be physical, accurate and alert. We’ve worked hard and connected well over the past nine days. That clarity will give us the opportunity to express ourselves.”

All Blacks team to face France: 1. Ethan de Groot, 2. Codie Taylor, 3. Fletcher Newell, 4. Josh Lord, 5. Sam Darry, 6. Peter Lakai, 7. Luke Jacobson, 8. Ardie Savea (c), 9. Cam Roigard, 10. Ruben Love, 11. Caleb Clarke, 12. Jordie Barrett, 13. Quinn Tupaea, 14. Will Jordan, 15. Damian McKenzie.
