Michael Olise is closing an unexpected loop: the Bayern Munich winger and France international, born in London, is about to sign with Chelsea — the club that had cast him aside at age 14 after seven years in its academy.

His former youth coach at a west London local club, Sean Conlon, recalls a departure that remained unclear: “What happened there stayed very private. Nobody really knows. Only a few Chelsea executives. I get the sense there was some kind of friction.” The Blues’ coaches apparently lacked patience with a player of atypical profile, yet passionate about football.

After Chelsea, Olise tried his luck with Manchester City’s youth setup, but failed to adapt far from home, notably because of a physique deemed too slight. He remained without a club for six months before being taken in by Reading, where he completed his formation between 2017 and 2019. It was in this town west of Greater London that he truly flourished, stringing together two seasons in the Championship (73 matches, 7 goals) and a nomination to the division’s team of the year in 2020-2021.

Crystal Palace then bet on him, before Bayern Munich recruited him two years ago. In the Bundesliga, the left-sided attacking midfielder established himself as one of Europe’s most prolific chance creators, with 62 goals and 60 assists in 143 matches across all competitions, notably feeding Harry Kane.

His choice to represent France rather than England stems from this chaotic journey through youth selections. His mother, of French-Algerian origin, passed on to him an attachment to the Blues from childhood; having never been called up by English youth teams after his Chelsea departure, Olise naturally opted for the French national team, with which he quickly established himself.

His return to Chelsea thus closes a painful chapter of his formation, and places the Blues in the uncomfortable position of the club that had let slip one of the most complete talents of his generation.
