Real Madrid categorically deny interest in signing Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez
Real Madrid have issued a formal statement ruling out any move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, despite reports linking the £107m Argentina international with a transfer to the Spanish capital.
Real Madrid have publicly and categorically denied any interest in signing Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, releasing an official club statement to quash speculation over a potential transfer to the Spanish capital.
The denial comes after weeks of mounting reports linking the 25-year-old Argentina international with a move to the Bernabéu, including comments attributed to his agent Javier Pastore — reported by Marca — suggesting Fernandez would welcome a life in Madrid.
“In light of the information and statements that have emerged in recent days regarding an alleged interest from Real Madrid CF in the player Enzo Fernandez, the club wishes to state that it has not made any efforts, either directly or indirectly, aimed at signing the aforementioned player and, furthermore, has no intention of pursuing such an operation,” the club said in their statement.
Real Madrid also took care to frame the denial in diplomatic terms, citing their institutional relationship with Chelsea as part of the reason for going public. “Precisely out of respect for an institution like Chelsea FC and the principles of institutional loyalty that have always guided Real Madrid’s actions, the club considers it necessary to categorically deny these speculations, which are unfounded and do not reflect reality.”
Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a reported £107m — a British transfer record at the time — just months after playing a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar. He has since made 169 appearances for the club across all competitions, contributing 31 goals.
Last season he scored 10 goals in 35 Premier League starts, but Chelsea’s campaign as a whole disappointed, with the club finishing 10th and missing out on European qualification entirely.
The west London side are now under new management, with former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso appointed in May. How Fernandez fits into Alonso’s plans — and whether further transfer speculation follows — remains to be seen.
