Raum faces Juventus competition as Balde emerges as cut-price January option for Man United

Manchester United’s search for a left-back will extend into the January transfer window, with updates emerging on two summer targets and the door firmly closing on a third.

Lewis Hall, the Newcastle United full-back United were most heavily linked with during the summer, has signed a new long-term contract at St James’ Park, effectively ending any realistic prospect of a move. United would now face a prohibitive fee to reopen that conversation.

With Hall off the table, attention turns to RB Leipzig’s David Raum and Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde. Raum, 28, has been on United’s radar for several years and was reportedly offered to the club in the summer window. He has less than a year remaining on his Leipzig contract, which would ordinarily make him an attractive, cost-effective option — but United are unlikely to have a clear run. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Juventus are keen to sign the Germany international on a free transfer next summer and have positioned themselves favourably thanks to a strong relationship with his agent, though the Italian club are said to face competition from sides in England.

Balde presents a different kind of opportunity. The 22-year-old Barcelona left-back has managed just 12 minutes of football this season, spending the majority of games as an unused substitute. Fichajes reports that Balde sits at the top of Barcelona’s list of players they want to sell, with the club operating a strict one-in, one-out policy before any new arrivals can be sanctioned. That financial pressure could allow United to negotiate a reduced transfer fee in January.

The need for reinforcement at left-back has been sharpened by a recent injury to Luke Shaw, the squad’s only natural senior option at the position. Shaw, 31, played every Premier League game last season but has a history of injury absences. In his absence, Patrick Dorgu has dropped back to provide cover, though head coach Michael Carrick has generally preferred to use the young Dane further forward.

United opted against signing a left-back in the summer, prioritising midfield before ultimately deciding to manage with their existing options for the first half of the season. January now looks set to bring a more concerted effort to address the gap.
