Rashford nutmegs Konsa in training to leave England squad in hysterics before Mexico clash
Marcus Rashford had his England teammates in stitches during a final training session in Mexico City, threading a nutmeg through Ezri Konsa's legs in a rondo ahead of the World Cup last-16 tie at the Azteca.
Marcus Rashford sent England’s training camp into laughter on the eve of their World Cup last-16 clash against Mexico at the Azteca, nutmegging Ezri Konsa during a rondo at Club Universidad Nacional in Mexico City.
Receiving a touch from John Stones, the 28-year-old — who spent last season on loan at Barcelona — scooped the ball into his possession and fired a rapid flick through Konsa’s legs before finding Morgan Rogers with the pass. Rashford immediately dissolved into laughter, while Jarell Quansah, Harry Kane, Declan Rice and Dan Burn all grabbed their heads in disbelief. Djed Spence covered his mouth, Kane eventually fell to the floor laughing, and Konsa, after belatedly closing his legs, simply turned and ran.
The moment was in keeping with a reputation Rashford has built in England training sessions. Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka has previously noted that the Manchester United academy product cannot resist putting a defender on the floor. “He hardly ever goes in, and every time I’ve been in the box he has to nutmeg someone, at least one person,” Saka said.
Jordan Henderson has made a similar observation — “Rashy will probably get the most megs” — while Declan Rice added: “Rashford is very good in the box, he’s just so smooth with it, his feet are so sharp. He finds little pockets to pass into.”
Rashford has started England’s last two matches, against Panama and DR Congo, and will be looking to retain his place for a third consecutive game. He faces competition from Anthony Gordon for the left-sided berth.
England’s preparations were not entirely straightforward. The squad had to contend with drumming and fireworks outside their hotel on Saturday evening, though Thomas Tuchel was measured in his response ahead of the disruption. “We had no issues tonight and I think Fifa took care of the situation,” the head coach said. “We have security around the hotel so we expect a good night’s sleep. I don’t want to talk about problems that don’t exist yet. If they come, we will accept them.”
