The Queensland Reds have re-signed Australia U20 outside back Xavier Rubens on a deal that sends him to Japan’s Saitama Wild Knights on a ten-week loan before he returns to prepare for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.

Rubens, who can play outside centre and wing, will train and compete with the Wild Knights — a club partner of the Reds — until November. The arrangement forms part of his new contract, giving the young back international experience while keeping his long-term future tied to Queensland.

“I’m as excited as I can be for a new experience in rugby,” Rubens said. “Locking in my future for 2027 is great and the Reds creating cool chances like this in Japan is definitely something you don’t get at other clubs. I jumped at the chance.”

Rubens credited his development at the Reds to working alongside Wallabies centres Josh Flook and Isaac Henry. “Training all season with them has really helped show me the stamp I need to make on a position,” he said. “I try to hold myself to a high standard — there’s a level I need to play at for the Reds and I try to bring that to Souths.”

Reds General Manager of High Performance Sam Cordingley described the arrangement as a “unique opportunity” that Rubens had earned through consistent performances in club rugby. “He has been a standout back in club rugby this season and has stepped up to every opportunity he has had with the Reds,” Cordingley said.

After the loan period concludes, the Reds’ pre-season schedule takes on an international flavour. The squad will face the Wild Knights twice before travelling to Italy to play an Italy XV on November 20 and Benetton Rugby on November 27 in Treviso.
