Powell ruled out of Wales' WXV campaign as injury crisis deepens for Lynn's side

Kayleigh Powell has been ruled out of Wales’ WXV Global Series campaign with a hamstring injury, dealing Sean Lynn’s side another significant blow less than a week before their opener against the Springbok Women at Cardiff Arms Park on Friday 18 September.

The Harlequins full-back will miss all three of Wales’ group fixtures — against South Africa, the USA Women’s Eagles, and Japan — across September and October. Her absence compounds a mounting injury crisis after the Welsh Rugby Union confirmed last week that Donna Rose, Kelsie Webster, and Hanna Tudor had also been ruled out for the next two months.

Powell, 27, has been one of Wales’ most consistent performers in recent seasons. She started all five of their 2026 Guinness Women’s Six Nations fixtures at full-back, scoring one try in a campaign that ended with a third consecutive wooden spoon. She has now accumulated 33 caps and has represented Wales at two Women’s Rugby World Cups, as well as featuring for Team GB in rugby sevens at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Wales head into the WXV Global Series without a Test match victory since July 2025, when they beat Australia in a warm-up fixture ahead of Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025. Their most recent competitive outing ended in a 43-24 defeat to Italy in Round 5 of the 2026 Women’s Six Nations, though an uncapped Welsh side did register a 34-17 win over the Barbarians at Allianz Stadium in June.

South Africa arrive in Cardiff having played five Tests since July. The Springbok Women drew a series with the USA on home soil, whitewashed Fiji on tour, and suffered a defeat to the Black Ferns at FNB Stadium — form that suggests a competitive contest despite Wales’ injury difficulties.

Lynn is set to name his match-day squad on Wednesday 16 September, two days before kick-off. Wales’ remaining WXV fixtures follow on 26 September against the USA, and a double-header against Japan on 23 October and 31 October.
