Pollock hailed as rugby's 'new Taylor Swift' after landmark 50th Saints appearance

Henry Pollock celebrated his 50th Northampton Saints appearance by fuelling the hype around him further, as Saints demolished Newcastle Red Bulls 59-26 on the opening weekend of the Gallagher Premiership — a performance that had pundits reaching for pop-culture comparisons.

Commentator David Flatman went as far as calling the 21-year-old the “new Taylor Swift of his generation”, arguing that Pollock has transcended rugby to become a cultural phenomenon in his own right. The milestone appearance came just days after Pollock signed a new contract at Franklin’s Gardens, cementing his long-term future with the club.

Pollock had already set tongues wagging before kick-off, warming up in a scrum cap before removing it to unveil a new set of cornrows. His recent link-up with promoter Eddie Hearn has added another layer to a profile that is growing well beyond the rugby community.

While Tommy Freeman and James Pater each claimed hat-tricks in Northampton’s nine-try rout, Pollock remained the dominant talking point in the post-match analysis. Fellow pundit Austin Healey argued the England back-rower could help bring rugby to an entirely new audience, though he was careful to attach a caveat.

“He is a movement. He’s the new Taylor Swift of his generation,” Flatman said.

Healey echoed the sentiment on Hearn’s involvement but stressed that on-field substance must underpin the off-field spectacle. “Eddie Hearn is great at what he does, and he’s taking rugby, through Pollock, to new eyeballs, which is what we need,” Healey said.

“What he’s got to do, Pollock, is remember two things. Rugby is largely based on respect and the old guys that watch the game, that don’t like this new movement, releasing hairstyles on matchdays and pink-coloured boots. You can still ingratiate yourself to those guys by getting stuck in, week in, week out, which I think he does, and he does in spades.”

Healey added that Pollock is arguably the most prominent English player on social media right now, but insisted the pitch remains the ultimate measure. “He’s going to get bigger and bigger, but he has to perform on the pitch, first and foremost.”

At 21, with 50 club appearances already behind him, a fresh contract secured, and a mainstream profile that few rugby players in England have ever matched, Pollock is clearly only getting started.
