Poirier links Atlanta airport arrest to grief over homeless, alcoholic father
Dustin Poirier has opened up about his father's lifelong struggle with alcohol addiction, saying Father's Day memories of his estranged, homeless dad triggered the drinking binge that led to his arrest at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Dustin Poirier has attributed his arrest at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Father’s Day to the emotional weight of his father’s decades-long battle with alcoholism, revealing in a candid podcast interview that his dad is currently homeless.
The former UFC lightweight champion (30-10) was detained at the Atlanta airport while on a layover en route to South Florida. After drinking during the stopover, Poirier was denied boarding, at which point he uttered a racial slur and threatened a police officer. He was arrested for public drunkenness and later released on bail.
Speaking on The Diary of a CEO podcast, Poirier explained that the binge was set off by thoughts of his father, with whom he has a fractured relationship. “He’s ruined his marriages; he’s ruined his relationships, his friendships. He’s ruined his relationship with his kids,” Poirier said. “My little brother is kind of off and on talking to him, but he has two kids that don’t speak to him at all. And won’t. He’s been in jail plenty of times for alcohol-related stuff. If I could paint a picture, what you think of a classic drunk or alcoholic — very selfish and continues to go back to it.”
Poirier said he had previously tried to help his father but that those efforts ultimately came to nothing. “He is actually homeless right now. Part of that, me getting in trouble at the airport was… It’s not my weight to carry. I tried to help him out and he is back on the street,” he said. “It is almost as if he doesn’t want help.”
The 35-year-old Louisiana native said the timing of the trip made the situation harder to process. “On Father’s Day, I was travelling to work, and I just couldn’t stop thinking about my father. And I started drinking at the airport, and that’s kind of what led to the incident.”
Poirier, one of the most decorated lightweights in UFC history, has been candid about personal struggles in the past, but this marks one of his most detailed public accounts of his family background and its impact on his behaviour.
