Piastri relaxed over McLaren future despite Norris' 2030 extension: 'There's no rush'

Oscar Piastri has dismissed any urgency around a new McLaren contract, insisting he is comfortable with his current deal despite renewed scrutiny triggered by Lando Norris’ extension to the end of 2030.

Speaking to media at Monza, Piastri said his own agreement — understood to run until at least the end of 2028 — gives him plenty of time before negotiations become necessary. “I’m good for now,” he said. “Mine’s still for a while, so there’s no rush to get into those talks at all.”

The Norris announcement reignited questions about Piastri’s long-term position at McLaren, a topic that had already dominated the summer. Rumours circulated that the team was courting Max Verstappen as a potential replacement, though those reports ultimately reflected a negotiating tactic by Verstappen’s management, who subsequently agreed a new deal to keep him at Red Bull.

Piastri was measured in his assessment of what Norris’ extended commitment means for him personally. “I don’t think it changes a whole lot for me,” he said. “It’s probably better for us as drivers that there’s a bit more stability around in general.”

He also noted that long contracts rarely tell the full story. “I would be amazed if there’s any massive contracts that have no wriggle room from the team side or the driver’s side. But I think it signifies the commitment to one another, which is a good thing — it signifies the intent of wanting to work together.”

Piastri’s original McLaren deal, signed when he joined the team for the 2023 season, would have expired at the end of this year. He extended early in 2024 on a multi-year basis. Norris, who made his McLaren debut in 2019, had previously been contracted through the end of 2027 before last weekend’s announcement pushed that to 2030.

The Australian was also broadly positive about the team’s direction despite a more challenging 2025 campaign compared to the previous two seasons. “I feel like we’ve got a lot of the right pieces of the puzzle here at the team,” he said. “This year’s obviously been a bit more difficult than the last couple, but hopefully we’re finding our feet again, being able to win races and fight for wins at least.”
