Olise calls out German referees over string of uncalled fouls

Michael Olise publicly criticized German refereeing after Bayern Munich’s draw with Schalke 04 (0-0), frustrated by a series of fouls against him that have gone unpunished since the start of the season.

The 24-year-old French winger, who has scored five goals in six matches across all competitions, went directly to referee Robert Schröder after the match. The scene escalated enough that his teammate Harry Kane intervened to prevent things from getting out of hand. “You need to be more consistent, otherwise I’m going to end up getting massacred,” Olise said. “You can’t just stand by desperately without reacting to the opposing defenders’ behavior. We can’t let everything slide, it’s not possible!”

This outburst is not an isolated incident. The French international had already expressed his frustration in the Supercup final against Borussia Dortmund, then in the Bundesliga opening match against VfB Stuttgart, each time after challenges deemed too physical and left without punishment.

Bayern Munich chose to speak out in turn. The club’s sporting director, Max Eberl, issued an explicit warning to German referees. “The more time goes on, the harder our opponents are in their interventions against Michael,” he said. “It’s because he is so brilliant that they try by all means to stop him, but it’s dangerous. He has never been injured since arriving two years ago, and the risk is becoming significant if referees don’t crack down more.”

The question of Olise’s protection will arise again very soon: Bayern host Union Berlin, a team known for its physical commitment, in the coming days.
