Northampton boss Dowson confident Pollock will stay despite seven-figure valuation

Northampton Saints head coach Phil Dowson has expressed confidence that Henry Pollock wants to remain at Franklin’s Gardens beyond his current contract, which expires next summer, despite the salary-cap pressures created by agent promoter Eddie Hearn’s very public valuation of the 21-year-old England and Lions star.

Hearn made headlines earlier this summer when he described Pollock as a “seven-figure player” — a figure that would stretch the budgets of virtually every club in English rugby. Dowson, however, has taken a measured view of the intervention, crediting Hearn for raising the profile of the sport while making clear that Northampton’s decisions will ultimately be governed by financial reality.

“I think Eddie Hearn has a job to do, and that’s to promote his client, and that’s to ask for more money for his client, and he’s done both of those very effectively,” Dowson said. “Eddie is great for the game. Having eyeballs on a sport — he has the ability to do that across lots of different platforms.”

Dowson was candid about the complexity of fitting Pollock’s demands into a squad budget that must also satisfy 57 or 58 other players. “He can pick a number,” the Saints boss said. “My job is to try to fit 57-58 players within a squad within a budget.”

Crucially, Dowson pointed to comments Hearn himself made beyond the headline salary figure. “The other things he said were, ‘Henry wants to win stuff. Henry wants to stay at Northampton. Henry wants to play with that group of players’,” Dowson noted. “He wants to win the World Cup. So the appetite is for him to stay. Now we’ve got to find some sort of happy medium.”

Dowson declined to go into specifics of the negotiations, maintaining a long-standing personal policy. “I’ve never, ever spoken about anyone’s contract negotiations publicly while they’re going on, and I never will. But we really want to keep him. It is going well, we are still pushing it through.”

Pollock has emerged as one of European rugby’s most exciting young talents, and his retention would represent a significant statement of intent from Northampton as they look to build on recent success.
