Mason Mount is in line to return to Manchester United’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town, having resumed first-team training after a minor hamstring injury. Winger Amad, however, will miss the game and faces a race to be fit before the first international break of the season begins on 21 September.

Mount has been sidelined since being withdrawn in the first half of a pre-season friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in Gothenburg three weeks ago, with the club initially describing the substitution as a precaution. The 27-year-old then missed United’s final two pre-season fixtures and was absent as the side made a poor start to their Premier League campaign last weekend.

“Amad won’t be involved this week,” said Michael Carrick. “He’ll be out for a little bit longer. Mason’s back around the group, which is great. Trained this week. So that’s a real positive for us.”

The return of Mount offers United a timely boost ahead of a fixture they will be expected to win. Carrick also confirmed that Lisandro Martinez, Kobbie Mainoo, and Marcus Rashford — the three players who returned late to pre-season after featuring in the final weekend of the World Cup — are all in contention to start.

“We got a squad to choose from,” Carrick said. “We got a good squad, and we could pick a variety of combinations within the team. So, we’ll pick a team for the weekend. But yeah, certainly the boys are massively in contention.”
