Mercedes shifts focus to 2027 as 145-point F1 lead gives Wolff room to plan ahead

Mercedes holds a 145-point advantage in the 2026 Formula 1 constructors’ standings, a margin team principal Toto Wolff calls a “nice buffer” — and one large enough that the Silver Arrows have already begun shifting development resources toward next season’s car.

The team has won 10 of the first 14 grands prix of the 2026 campaign, with rookie Kimi Antonelli leading the drivers’ championship. That run of form has come despite rivals Ferrari and McLaren bringing heavier upgrade programmes to their challengers throughout the year. Mercedes introduced updates at the Canadian Grand Prix in May and has another package planned for the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, but its rate of new parts has been slower than that of its closest competitors.

Wolff confirmed the strategic pivot after Antonelli claimed victory at the first Spanish Grand Prix held at the Madring circuit. “2027 started a while ago, before the summer,” he said. “Summer we switched resources into next year and that continues as per the plan independent of where we’re standing in the championship.”

Despite the commanding lead, Wolff is reluctant to treat the constructors’ title as settled. Ferrari faces a substantial gap, and while Lando Norris has taken two wins for McLaren to build some momentum, Wolff is wary of how quickly a comfortable position can erode.

“You can DNF, you can crash out. It happens two times in a row and then suddenly what looked like a nice buffer is not anymore because you have six races to go,” he said. “So, in my opinion, we just need to ignore the points until it is mathematically not realistic anymore for them to win and until then just concentrate on each and every week and try to bring your best game.”

Part of bringing that best game involves the upgrade package destined for Malaysia. Wolff described it as “solid” but acknowledged the inherent uncertainty of introducing new components at a race weekend. “We got to survive another one in Baku and let’s see, but sometimes it doesn’t correlate with the road so well,” he said. “I hope that it does.”

The contrast with Mercedes’ difficult years under F1’s ground effect regulations makes the 2026 dominance all the more striking. Having rebuilt around an entirely new technical ruleset, the Silver Arrows have so far made the transition look straightforward — even as they quietly lay the groundwork for what comes next.
