Meafou knee injury rules France lock out of November clash with world champions Springboks

Emmanuel Meafou will miss France’s November showdown with world champions South Africa after the Toulouse lock sustained a knee injury in the dying seconds of his club’s 29-23 Top 14 win over Vannes on Saturday, French outlet La Depeche has reported. The 28-year-old is expected to be sidelined for up to three months.

The injury was caused by an illegal no-arms tackle from France team-mate Rodrigue Neti, and its severity became clearer after the 145kg lock was absent from Toulouse’s open training session on Tuesday.

The timing is particularly damaging for head coach Fabien Galthié, who rarely omits Meafou from his matchday squads. France host Fiji, South Africa and Argentina in the Nations Championship in November, and Meafou’s physicality would have been a key asset against the Springboks’ formidable pack when the two sides meet in Paris on Friday, 14 November.

That fixture carries considerable weight beyond the autumn window. It will be the final meeting between France and South Africa before a potential Rugby World Cup semi-final in Australia in 2027 — and France have won just one of their last ten encounters with Rassie Erasmus’ side. They are also yet to avenge their elimination at the hands of the Springboks on home soil at the 2023 World Cup.

Meafou’s absence compounds an already difficult situation at Toulouse, where fellow lock Clément Vergé is already sidelined with an ACL injury. The French champions may now be forced to recruit a medical joker to bolster their second-row options until Meafou returns in December.

On the club front, Meafou will also miss Toulouse’s Champions Cup opener against Exeter Chiefs on 18 October. He will be targeting a return for the round-two fixture against the Lions in Johannesburg on 12 December.
