Scott McTominay will undergo cardiac ablation surgery after Napoli confirmed the 29-year-old has been diagnosed with a mild benign arrhythmia, the Serie A club announced on Tuesday.

A statement from Napoli read: “Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days. He will be available again after the international break.”

The condition is described as benign and not uncommon among professional athletes. It is not expected to have any long-term impact on McTominay’s career.

The Scottish midfielder joined Napoli from Manchester United in a £40m deal in 2024 and has been one of the standout performers in Italian football since his arrival, scoring 27 goals in 82 appearances and winning the Serie A title last season. That form has made him one of the most effective box-to-box midfielders in Europe since his move.

McTominay came through the Manchester United academy and made 255 appearances for the club across all competitions, netting 29 goals, after breaking into the first team during the 2016/17 season.

At international level, the 29-year-old has earned 73 caps for Scotland and scored 15 goals, establishing himself as one of the most important players in Steve Clarke’s squad.

Napoli’s statement offers reassurance that the procedure is routine in nature and that McTominay is expected to be available for selection once the international break concludes.
