Scott McTominay will miss Scotland’s Nations League fixtures in September after Napoli confirmed on Tuesday that the midfielder needs surgery to correct a mild benign arrhythmia — an irregular heartbeat deemed non-serious and posing no significant risk to his overall health.

The 29-year-old is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks following the corrective procedure. Scotland open their campaign under new manager Sebastien Pocognoli with four Nations League fixtures against Slovenia (twice), Switzerland and North Macedonia in an extended international window beginning in September.

McTominay has featured in both of Napoli’s Serie A matches this season but was substituted after 56 minutes of a 2-1 home defeat by Como at the weekend. He will also miss the club’s Champions League opener against Arsenal next week.

The midfielder, who has earned 73 caps for Scotland, was part of Steve Clarke’s squad at the World Cup. His Napoli and Scotland teammate Billy Gilmour has returned to action for the Italian club in recent weeks after missing the tournament through injury.
