McTominay returns to Napoli training two weeks after heart surgery

Scott McTominay returned to Napoli’s training centre on Thursday, just two weeks after undergoing a planned procedure to correct mild benign arrhythmia — a condition that causes an irregular or abnormal heart rate. The 29-year-old trained separately in the gym and was pictured working on an exercise bike, with the club confirming the update on their official website.

The surgery had ruled McTominay out of Napoli’s last four matches across all competitions, but his swift return to individual training suggests he is on track to meet the recovery timeline set out by club director Giovanni Manna before the operation.

“It will take 28 days for sporting fitness because he will take anticoagulant drugs,” Manna said at the time. “For two weeks, the player will rest and then resume competitive activity without contact.”

Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport reports that McTominay is targeting availability for Napoli’s match against Frosinone following the international break. He will miss Scotland’s Nations League fixtures against Slovenia, Switzerland and North Macedonia during that period.

Napoli currently sit ninth in Serie A and have won just one of the four games played without their Scottish midfielder, underlining how influential he has become since joining from Manchester United in a £25.7 million deal in the summer of 2024. In 82 appearances for the Italian club, McTominay has scored 27 goals and contributed 10 assists.

Before his move to Naples, McTominay came through the academy at Old Trafford and went on to make 255 appearances for United, scoring 29 goals, after breaking into the first team at the end of the 2016/17 season.
