McTominay confirms heart procedure is minor and rules out Napoli contract talks

Scott McTominay has moved to reassure Napoli supporters that his upcoming heart procedure is not a serious concern, while also confirming that no contract extension talks have taken place with the club.

Napoli announced on Tuesday that the 29-year-old will undergo a cardiac arrhythmia ablation — a corrective procedure using pulsed field ablation (PFA) — after doctors identified a mild benign arrhythmia. The club said he would be available again after the international break, with McTominay not expected to return to action until early October.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the former Manchester United midfielder said the procedure had been on the agenda for some time. “I’m fine, the procedure was something I’d planned to do with the club for quite a while. We’d already talked about it in pre-season, I’ll be out for a few weeks,” he said. He also posted on Instagram: “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”

According to the NHS, an arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats too fast, too slowly, or irregularly. The ablation technique targets the tissue causing the irregular rhythm.

McTominay’s last appearance before his enforced absence came in Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat to Como, where he was substituted in the second half. Napoli had opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Genoa before that setback.

With the midfielder now firmly established as a key figure in Napoli’s midfield following his Serie A Player of the Year award for 2024-25, questions over his long-term future at the club have intensified. McTominay was direct when asked about a new deal. “There haven’t been any new talks. The important thing is what happens on the pitch, not the contract extension. I don’t know when it will happen, it’s not the time to be thinking about that.”

Head coach Max Allegri also disclosed that McTominay had been managing a separate issue in training. “McTominay had some problems with blisters, so he’s been training on a limited basis. Hopefully, we can get him into the best possible condition as soon as possible,” Allegri said.

The Scot is set to miss Napoli’s next four fixtures, including a high-profile Serie A clash against Inter Milan on Saturday and a Champions League tie against Premier League champions Arsenal.
