Maresca faces City media ahead of Carabao Cup clash with Brighton after Villa defeat
Enzo Maresca addresses the press at Manchester City's Etihad Campus ahead of Wednesday's Carabao Cup tie against Brighton, with questions over Erling Haaland's involvement and a potential recall for Ayyoub Bouaddi following Saturday's Premier League loss to Aston Villa.
Enzo Maresca met the media at Manchester City’s Etihad Campus on Tuesday morning ahead of Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton and Hove Albion, with the City head coach under pressure to address a growing list of selection and tactical questions.
City head into the midweek cup fixture on the back of a Premier League defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday — their first league loss of the season. Maresca acknowledged frustration at his side’s failure to convert chances, with Villa able to play through City’s midfield too comfortably for his liking.
The most pressing selection question surrounds Erling Haaland, who scored against Villa and finished eighth in Monday night’s Ballon d’Or ceremony. The Norwegian has frequently been rested in the Carabao Cup amid a congested schedule, and Maresca faces a familiar balancing act between rotation and fielding a competitive side against a Brighton team that has made a strong start to the season.
Ayyoub Bouaddi is expected to be in contention for a recall after being left out of the starting XI against Villa — a decision that drew criticism from supporters. The teenager made a notable impact when introduced as a substitute in City’s Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain, and many fans feel his absence from the midfield against top opposition has cost the team.
The combination of Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernandez, and Rayan Cherki in central midfield has drawn scrutiny, though Maresca noted the trio functioned well in a 3-0 win over Liverpool and that City still claimed victory at Old Trafford with ten men after Cherki was withdrawn at half-time. He indicated it is too early to draw firm conclusions about the midfield’s makeup.
Matthew Nunes’ fitness is also on the agenda, with an injury update expected from the manager. City face Brighton twice in quick succession this week, adding further complexity to Maresca’s squad management decisions.
Bouaddi’s potential involvement and the question of how heavily Maresca rotates his squad will be the defining storylines heading into a tie that City will be keen to progress in as they seek a response to the Villa result.
