Manchester United have been identified as one of several clubs monitoring Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha, with reports from Germany suggesting the 25-year-old has emerged as a potential long-term successor to Casemiro at Old Trafford.

Nmecha caught the eye at the World Cup when he opened Germany’s account in their 7-1 demolition of Curacao, curling a first-time right-footed strike into the top corner from 20 yards. His box-to-box energy and ability to shut down counterattacks drew wider attention, with Sky Sports Deutschland reporting that United are among numerous suitors tracking his progress in the United States.

The midfielder progressed through Manchester City’s academy before joining Wolfsburg in 2021 following a productive loan spell at Anderlecht. A move to Dortmund followed, and he has since established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s more complete central midfielders.

Despite the reported interest, a summer deal looks unlikely. Dortmund have secured Nmecha on a contract until 2030, and the club are understood to be relaxed about his situation. A release clause in his deal — understood to be set at £61m — does not become active until the summer of 2027, and the German club are prepared to hold firm until that window.

Nmecha’s agent, Tobi Alabi, reinforced that message in a recent interview with German publication Bild. “Felix still has two years left on his contract, and we fully respect that,” Alabi said. “Borussia Dortmund have played an important role in his development. He is grateful for the trust and the platform the club have given him. Right now, the focus is very clear: Felix is determined to give everything for Borussia Dortmund, to fight for the club and to help the team achieve its goals.”

United are not alone in their admiration. Neighbours Manchester City, who originally developed Nmecha, have also been linked with a move, as have Real Madrid.

In the shorter term, United are closing in on a separate midfield addition. Brazilian international Ederson is on the verge of joining from Atalanta in a deal reported to be worth £39m, with the midfielder expected to undergo a medical while on World Cup duty with Brazil.
