Manchester United are set to let Angelo Stiller’s £31m release clause expire on Wednesday evening without making a move, ending a prolonged but ultimately informal pursuit of the Stuttgart midfielder.

MEN Sport understands there has been no indication from Michael Carrick’s side that they will trigger the clause before the deadline, despite a BILD report confirming it lapses this week. The German outlet also revealed that a United delegation attended several of Stuttgart’s home games last season to monitor the 25-year-old, yet the club never opened formal negotiations.

Stiller was one of the most influential players in the Bundesliga last term, featuring in more matches than any other Stuttgart player and playing a central role in the club’s Champions League qualification — only the seventh time in their history. Stuttgart are understandably keen to keep him, and the expiry of his release clause will give them a significant boost in doing so.

United have already moved to reshape their midfield this summer, signing Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Both arrivals bring Premier League experience — a quality Carrick appears to be prioritising following Casemiro’s departure. While Carrick is reported to want a third midfield addition, Stiller does not appear to fit the profile the club is targeting at this stage.

The club’s earlier pursuit of Mateus Fernandes also came to nothing, prompting the swift moves for Santos and Tielemans to ensure midfield cover ahead of the new season.

For Stiller personally, the summer has not been without its highlights. The 25-year-old earned a place in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad for the World Cup and made his tournament debut against Ecuador in the group stage, capping a breakthrough year at club and international level.

With the release clause window closing and no formal offer forthcoming, Stiller now looks set to remain at Stuttgart for at least another season.
