Man United set to sell Toby Collyer for 'sizeable fee' despite pre-season role
Manchester United are expected to sell 22-year-old midfielder Toby Collyer before the transfer window closes on 1 September, with Hull City among the interested clubs. The move is part of a broader push to monetise academy graduates, following Radek Vitek's £14m sale to Middlesbrough.
Manchester United are pressing ahead with plans to sell academy midfielder Toby Collyer before the summer transfer window shuts on 1 September, with the club confident of commanding a sizeable fee for the 22-year-old despite his prominent role in pre-season.
Collyer has featured regularly in United’s pre-season fixtures due to concerns over Mason Mount’s fitness, but the club’s intention to move him on remains unchanged. Hull City, where Collyer spent the second half of last season on loan under Michael Carrick, continue to hold interest in a permanent deal.
The planned sale forms part of a wider strategy at Old Trafford to generate revenue from the academy. Earlier this month, Czech goalkeeper Radek Vitek, also 22, joined Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £14 million, including add-ons, a buy-back clause and a 35 per cent sell-on fee. United view Collyer as capable of attracting a comparable return, according to the Daily Mail.
Collyer first broke into the first-team picture under head coach Ruben Amorim during an injury-hit period last season, but a long-term future at the club appears unlikely given the current direction of travel.
Left-back Harry Amass, 19, is another academy product who could depart, with United understood to believe he is not yet ready for senior football at the club. Amass impressed on loan at Sheffield Wednesday before a second temporary spell at Norwich City, and a permanent exit for around £6 million has been mooted. A further loan remains an option if no buyer emerges.
StrikerEthan Wheatley, 20, is also attracting interest, with the Daily Mail reporting that Everton are in talks to sign the forward, who had loan stints at Northampton Town and Bradford City last season.
On the incomings side, United have so far made three senior additions this summer. Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea for £50 million, Karl Darlow joined on a free transfer following his Leeds United departure, and Youri Tielemans completed his move from Aston Villa. The club are still targeting reinforcements at left-back and in attack, with a further midfielder also under consideration as Ruben Amorim prepares for a campaign across four competitions.
