Makhachev tells Jones 'your whole life seems tied to breaking rules' in heated GOAT exchange

Islam Makhachev and Jon Jones traded pointed barbs on social media this week after the reigning UFC welterweight champion publicly questioned the legitimacy of Jones’ unbeaten record, citing two past doping violations that he argued should disqualify the streak from GOAT discussions.

It began on Monday when Makhachev told Red Corner MMA that Jones’ winning run was not “considered valid” because he “was caught doping twice.” Makhachev specifically referenced the fight against his longtime friend and training partner Daniel Cormier, in which Jones’ victory was overturned to a no-contest and he was stripped of the light heavyweight title after testing positive for a turinabol metabolite.

“I’m not denying that Jon Jones is one of the greatest athletes in history,” Makhachev said. “But he was caught doping twice, and I think that’s why his streak isn’t considered valid. He went into a fight while on PEDs and won. That’s where a new count should have started.”

Jones responded on social media, defending himself against the doping accusations while also taking aim at Cormier and suggesting Makhachev has yet to reach his level in the all-time conversation. Jones argued that USADA’s own findings stated the substance detected was “not found to be performance enhancing or intentional,” adding that his hand was raised every time he competed. He closed with a pointed message: “Keep chasing, it’s lonely at the top, Islam — hopefully I’ll see you up here one day.”

Makhachev fired back hours later, declining to walk back his original position. “Jon, I’m not trying to diminish your achievements in any way,” he wrote on X. “But your whole life seems to be tied to breaking the rules one way or another, and somehow, you’re never the one to be blamed.”

Both fighters have won and defended UFC titles across two weight classes, giving the debate genuine competitive weight. Makhachev is currently the reigning welterweight champion, having recorded victories over Jack Della Maddalena and Ian Machado Garry. Jones, meanwhile, stepped away from the sport following his heavyweight title defence against Stipe Miocic in 2024, leaving his status in any future matchup uncertain.
