Mac Allister refuses to guarantee Liverpool stay as contract talks remain unresolved

Alexis Mac Allister has declined to rule out leaving Liverpool when his contract expires, telling ESPN that ‘there isn’t a final decision set in stone’ over his future at Anfield.

The Argentina midfielder had already unsettled supporters earlier this month when he admitted feeling ‘very sad’ that Liverpool had not offered him a new deal over the summer — unlike team-mates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch. His latest comments do little to ease those concerns, even as he insists he is not actively pushing for the exit door.

‘The reality is that I still have two years left on my contract,’ Mac Allister said. ‘I’m going to give my absolute best. A lot can happen in two years, there are plenty of possibilities. From my side, I really enjoy being where I am. Hopefully, I’ll stay for more years, but if it ends up being just two, that’s fine too.’

The 27-year-old also revealed that opportunities to leave the club arose during the summer transfer window, and that any communication about his future was conducted through his agent rather than directly with him. ‘There was no direct conversation with me, it was with my agent,’ he said. ‘What I got from my agent is they weren’t in a position to renew me. We won the Premier League together and went through difficult times together, and I will always give my best — but of course it makes me sad.’

Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton for £35 million in the summer of 2023 and has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable midfielders, playing a prominent role under both Jurgen Klopp and current head coach Arne Slot. His contract situation now represents one of the more pressing issues for the club to resolve, with his deal set to expire in the summer of 2027.
