Lloyd Williams reverses retirement to re-sign with Worcester four months after hanging up his boots

Former Wales scrum-half Lloyd Williams has reversed his retirement decision and signed a new deal with Worcester Warriors, the club confirmed, making himself available for selection just four months after announcing he was stepping away from the game.

Williams, 36, had retired ahead of last season’s play-offs — a campaign that ended with Worcester winning the Championship title in their first season back in professional rugby. The 32-cap international played 22 times last season, scoring six tries and captaining the side on two occasions.

His return comes in time for Worcester’s match against Bedford Blues, a rematch of last year’s Championship final.

“It’s been a bit of a surreal week, but it’s been great coming back, seeing everyone and fitting back into the environment — everyone’s made me feel really welcome,” Williams said. “Now I need to switch on to playing and remember what it used to feel like to play for Worcester, and I can’t wait to experience that again.”

Head coach Matt Everard welcomed the u-turn warmly, highlighting Williams’ influence beyond his on-field contributions. “We are delighted that such a brilliant person both on and off the pitch as Lloyd has decided to re-join us ahead of the season,” Everard said. “Lloyd was a massive influence not just on the playing group last season, but also on the coaching staff through his attitude and desire to continually grow.”

Everard added that Williams’ experience and knowledge would continue to benefit the squad. “His impact on the pitch is outstanding, but the experience and wealth of knowledge he brings is excellent. We can’t wait to see how he continues to add to the group.”
