Liverpool to offer Ngumoha new deal as Mac Allister reveals training anger at Anfield youngsters

Liverpool are planning to offer winger Rio Ngumoha a new long-term contract, with the club having no intention of selling the 18-year-old despite reported interest from Bayern Munich and Arsenal. Ngumoha, who turned 18 last month, is now eligible to sign an extended deal beyond the youth contract restrictions that previously applied, and securing his future is understood to be a priority for the club.

The England youth international’s current deal runs until 2028, but Liverpool are keen to tie him down further after a breakout season attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. According to The Athletic, the Premier League side regard Ngumoha as a key part of their long-term plans.

The news comes off the back of a positive week at Anfield, with Andoni Iraola’s side beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday to advance to the fourth round. Goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed the win, with Mac Allister also providing the assist for Gakpo’s strike.

Iraola handed starts to three academy players — Trey Nyoni (19), James McConnell (22) and Lewis Koumas (20) — with Koumas earning the man-of-the-match award. The trio’s performances drew praise from Mac Allister, who revealed the emotional investment he places in the development of Liverpool’s younger players.

“It was really important for the young players,” the Argentine midfielder said. “They show every single day in training that they want to be here. They work really, really hard and they have quality. I’m really happy for them because they deserve this in training.”

The 27-year-old World Cup winner also admitted his mentoring style can tip into frustration. “I focus quite a lot on them and I get angry,” he said. “I think it’s part of me wanting them to succeed. As I said, they’re really good. They have quality, they are intense and they know what the club means. It’s important and they are going to be really important for us this season.”

Liverpool remain unbeaten across all competitions under Iraola and travel to Bournemouth — his former club — in their next fixture.
