Liverpool lose Isak and Gakpo to injury for pivotal Premier League clash with Man City
Liverpool will be without Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo when Manchester City visit Anfield on Sunday, with the pair ruled out through thigh and ankle injuries respectively as City arrive having won all five of their league matches this season.
Liverpool will face Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday without two of their most dangerous attackers, after Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo were ruled out through injury. Isak is sidelined with a thigh problem while Gakpo has an ankle injury, though neither issue is expected to be long-term. The duo join Hugo Ekitike on the sidelines.
The absences are a significant blow for Liverpool given both players had been in strong form this season — and both were reportedly targets for City in the summer transfer window. Their loss leaves Arne Slot’s attack considerably depleted for one of the most anticipated fixtures of the Premier League calendar.
City arrive on Merseyside in formidable shape, having won all five of their league matches so far this season. The fixture comes, however, in the shadow of a landmark ruling in the Premier League’s 115 charges case, which found City guilty of almost all the charges brought against them. The club are appealing the decision and continue to maintain they have done nothing wrong.
The verdict dominated the international break and featured prominently at Enzo Maresca’s press conference on Friday. The City manager was measured in his response, insisting the players would not be distracted by the off-field noise as they prepare for the trip to Anfield.
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was also asked for his view on the charges ruling. “I think uncertainty is not good for anyone and anyone involved,” he said, “but the process is ongoing and we have to be patient like everyone else and see what happens at the end.”
