Liverpool chase Stuttgart's Jamie Leweling in late bid to replace Mohamed Salah

Liverpool have made a late move for VfB Stuttgart winger Jamie Leweling as they look to fill the void left by Mohamed Salah’s departure, according to Sky Germany. Everton are also reported to be interested in the 25-year-old, who is under contract in the Bundesliga until 2029.

The Reds have navigated a turbulent summer window that saw Salah, Andrew Robertson and Ibrahima Konaté all leave the club. Liverpool came close to losing Cody Gakpo to Manchester City before securing the signings of PSG forward Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz, with Hugo Ekitike also expected to be available once fit.

Leweling contributed 11 goals and 12 assists across all competitions for Stuttgart in 2024-25, with seven goals and nine assists coming in the Bundesliga alone. His finishing was notably efficient — he missed just one Opta-defined big chance in the league and converted seven goals from an expected goals (xG) figure of 4.31, suggesting he outperformed his underlying numbers considerably.

The German international also ranked joint second among Stuttgart players for big chances created, level with Angelo Stiller and Maximilian Mittelstadt on ten. His take-on output was more modest, averaging just one dribble per 90 minutes, though he won nearly seven duels per 90 at a success rate approaching 50 per cent.

Should Leweling move to Anfield, he would slot in on the right flank as a direct replacement for Salah, though he also carries experience on the left. With Barcola and Munoz both favouring the left side, Liverpool’s options on the right remain limited — Gakpo would likely be the fallback if no deal is struck.

Roma have also registered strong interest in Leweling in recent days, though no agreement has been reached with any club. Liverpool have additionally been linked with Ismaila Sarr and Yankuba Minteh, but neither of those moves appears close to completion. Stuttgart’s willingness to sell a player tied down until 2029 means any deal is expected to command a significant fee.
