Lewis Hall signs Newcastle contract until 2031 and scores to seal comeback win over Hull

Lewis Hall capped a defining week in his career by scoring in Newcastle United’s 2-1 home win over Hull City on Saturday, just days after committing his future to the club with a contract extension running until 2031.

The 22-year-old left-back’s goal helped the Magpies bounce back from a 4-1 defeat at Leeds United, and came shortly after he was recalled to the England squad — a return that followed his omission from the World Cup roster.

Hall, who grew up supporting Newcastle through his father’s roots despite being born in Slough, made clear the move was never purely professional. “When I was younger, I had a stadium tour,” he said. “Then when I was in the academy at Chelsea I would always look out for their results. I used to watch the games on TV. I genuinely thought I would play here one day. I didn’t necessarily think it would be so soon in my career but I’m here now and I’m buzzing.”

His connection to St James’ Park stretches back to his Premier League debut, when he appeared there for Chelsea in 2022. “I wasn’t thinking about it much around the game because I was caught up in the moment. When I got home, I thought how good it would be to play here. The atmosphere was incredible that day; I’m buzzing to be here for a lot more games.”

The contract renewal carries added significance given the turbulence surrounding Newcastle this summer. The club sold Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimarães, and Sandro Tonali in a shift towards a new financial model, while former captain Kieran Trippier also departed. Manager Eddie Howe then stepped down at the end of July, leaving supporters uncertain about the club’s direction.

New head coach Matthias Jaissle, the German manager brought in to lead the rebuilt squad, had flagged a difficult transitional period ahead. Retaining Hall — who attracted reported interest from Manchester United — was seen as a key signal of intent during that reset.

Hall acknowledged the World Cup snub had been difficult to process. “I was gutted. In football, you never take anything for granted,” he said, though he added that being surrounded by friends and team-mates involved in the tournament helped him stay positive.

“I’m always proud of every game I play, I never take it for granted,” he said after the Hull win. “I’m really proud to represent this team and this city. When you win, the feeling around the city is so good and I’m really happy.”
