Leicester Tigers move to sign England centre Seb Atkinson as Gloucester contract nears end

Leicester Tigers have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Gloucester inside centre Seb Atkinson when his contract expires at the end of the season, making them the first club to openly express interest in the England international.

Atkinson, 24, has earned seven caps for England and is regarded by Leicester as a player who could address a persistent gap in their squad. The Tigers have placed him on a shortlist of targets they intend to approach ahead of next summer’s transfer window.

The club has been without reliable depth at inside centre since Dan Kelly departed for Munster and Izaia Perese returned to the Queensland Reds, with no direct replacement brought in during either window.

Atkinson began his career at Worcester Warriors before joining Gloucester in 2022, where he won a Premiership Rugby Cup in 2024. He had previously been linked with a move to London — where his partner works — with Saracens and Harlequins both mentioned as potential destinations. Leicester, however, are the first side to break cover.

Gloucester head coach George Skivington acknowledged the speculation earlier this week but struck a measured tone, insisting the club can only focus on what is within their control.

“Look, guys like Seb will obviously always be in high demand,” Skivington said. “He’s been here a long time, we’ve invested a lot in him, and he’s playing for Gloucester and playing for England. So he’s in a pretty good spot as it is.”

Skivington added that while Gloucester would hope players they have developed choose to stay, the realities of professional sport make such decisions complex. “There are always numerous factors for players to consider. We would obviously hope, particularly guys we’ve invested a lot of time in, would stay — but sport is sport, and it can be cruel occasionally.”
