Leicester sign Junior Wallaby Jack Bowen from Waratahs but must wait until 2027 to see him

Leicester Tigers have signed fly-half Jack Bowen from the NSW Waratahs on a multi-year deal, though supporters will not see the 22-year-old in action at Mattioli Woods Welford Road until 2027 at the earliest.

Bowen, a former Junior Wallaby who made 17 Super Rugby appearances across four seasons with the Waratahs, will first spend the 2026-27 season at Leicester’s Japanese partner club, Mitsubishi Dynaboars, competing in Rugby League One before making the move to the East Midlands.

The arrangement follows a well-worn path at the club. Lewis Chessum, Charlie Titcombe, and Harry Palmer have all previously spent time at Dynaboars as part of their development programmes.

Tigers head coach Geoff Parling said the club identified Bowen as a player with significant upside. “Jack is someone who we think has some real potential and couldn’t hide his excitement at getting the opportunity to come here,” Parling said. “He’ll come to Leicester via our partner club in Japan to keep working on his game, and we then look forward to seeing what he can do with us from 2027 onwards.”

Bowen himself expressed enthusiasm about the move. “Joining Tigers is a really special feeling. Leicester’s a club with such strong history and they’ve had so much success in the past, so to be able to come across to a club like that is super exciting,” he said. “It’s a move that I’m hoping propels my career forward and hopefully I can add to the success that Leicester’s already had.”

The signing leaves Leicester’s immediate fly-half situation unchanged. With no replacement yet named for the departed James O’Connor, Billy Searle and Charlie Titcombe will continue to compete for the No.10 jersey, with Joseph Woodward and Orlando Bailey providing cover in the short term.
