Dejan Kulusevski made his long-awaited return to football in Tottenham’s 3-1 Premier League win over Coventry on Monday, ending an absence of 526 days that he described as an “impossible” journey and one that, at its darkest point, threatened to end his career entirely.

The 26-year-old Swedish attacker was introduced to a deafening reception in the 87th minute, capping 17 months of injury hell that began with what was initially described as a minor knock during the 2024-25 season. Surgery on his right patella in May last year was followed by multiple setbacks, and a second procedure in March finally set him on the road to recovery.

“The journey felt impossible. It was the most difficult it could be, but I had a feeling I was going to come back to play football,” Kulusevski said after the match. “I had to tell my closest ones it might not work out, just a couple of months ago, but in my heart, I always knew it would work out.”

His determination through the rehabilitation process was total. “I kept working, 10 hours every day when no-one is watching,” he said. “When everything was impossible and everyone gave up, I never gave up because of this that happened today.”

The win over Coventry was Tottenham’s first Premier League victory of the season, and it also featured a remarkable parallel comeback. James Maddison marked his first start in 536 days with a goal and a man-of-the-match display, giving Spurs fans a glimpse of the quality they have been denied for the better part of two seasons.

During Kulusevski’s absence, Tottenham managed only three home league wins and narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the 2025-26 campaign. He also missed the club’s Europa League triumph and never featured under either Thomas Frank or Igor Tudor, while Sweden’s World Cup campaign went ahead without him.

Now, he is focused on making up for lost time — and believes the experience has changed him. “I see myself a little different now. I think I am a different man now. Same guy, same guy that wants to play football, but a little bit smarter,” he said.

His message to supporters who have waited for his return carried a broader promise for the club. “I am here to show them a better me. And a better me will be a better Spurs so we will be good.”
