Jorgensen backs Wallabies to end six-year drought against Ireland in Sydney
Australia host Ireland at Allianz Stadium in Sydney next Saturday, looking to snap a five-Test losing streak against the world No.3 side. Utility back Max Jorgensen says the Wallabies need no special plan — just their own game.
Australia’s Max Jorgensen has called on the Wallabies to trust their own game as they bid to end a six-year losing run against Ireland, with the two sides set to meet at Allianz Stadium in Sydney next Saturday in the Nations Championship.
Ireland have won five consecutive Tests against Australia, a sequence that includes a 46-19 victory in Dublin last year. The Wallabies have not beaten Ireland since 2018, but Jorgensen insists the gap is smaller than that record suggests.
“Look, they’re all humans at the end of the day,” the utility back said on Sunday. “We don’t need to do anything special, we just need to play our game. We came very close to them two years ago there in Ireland … we just fell short.”
That near-miss Jorgensen references was a 22-19 defeat in Dublin in 2024 — a result that left Australia agonisingly short but also gave the squad a reference point for what they are capable of against top-tier opposition.
Jorgensen’s confidence appears rooted in the Wallabies’ internal competition rather than any tactical overhaul. “When we’re at our best, not many teams can beat us,” he said, adding that the fight for places within the squad keeps standards high. “You want to keep competing every week to keep your spot, because at the end of the day no one owns the jersey.”
The Nations Championship fixture represents one of Australia’s most significant home tests of the season, and a first win over Ireland in seven years would carry considerable weight both in the standings and in the broader rebuild under their coaching staff.
