Jones reclaims GOAT crown on social media after Pereira's TKO loss to Gane
Jon Jones posted a video wearing a GOAT necklace after Alex Pereira was stopped by Ciryl Gane in the second round of their interim heavyweight title fight at UFC Freedom 250, reigniting the debate over MMA's greatest fighter.
Jon Jones wasted no time staking his claim as MMA’s greatest of all time after Alex Pereira suffered a second-round TKO defeat to Ciryl Gane in the interim heavyweight title fight at UFC Freedom 250 on Sunday at the White House. Jones posted a video to social media wearing a GOAT necklace — a pointed response to a contest that had been framed, at least partly, as a referendum on his legacy.
Pereira (13-4) had been chasing history, attempting to become a champion in a third UFC weight class. But Gane (14-2) controlled the fight from the outset, landing his jab consistently and denying Pereira any meaningful foothold. “Bon Gamin” hurt Pereira early in the second round, followed up with ground-and-pound, and ultimately finished the fight on the feet with a standing TKO.
The result carries particular weight for Jones given the circumstances surrounding the event. After retiring last year, Jones had publicly lobbied for a spot on the White House card once the event was announced. When he was left off the bill, UFC president Dana White stated that Jones had never been under serious consideration — a claim Jones disputed, suggesting negotiations had in fact taken place.
White had previously said he would consider Pereira the GOAT if he beat Gane. That scenario never materialised. Gane himself, who lost to Jones at UFC 285 in 2023, had recently gone on record calling “Bones” the greatest fighter of all time — a view Jones appears more than happy to amplify.
Jones’s social media response, while characteristically theatrical, lands in the context of a genuine rift between him and the UFC. Whether Sunday’s result brings the two sides closer to resolving that standoff — or simply gives Jones more ammunition — remains to be seen.
